MANILA—From the original 95 who applied, the list of rookies has been trimmed to 87, led by boxing icon Manny Pacquiao. They will be vying for a slot in today’s 2014 PBA Annual Rookie Draft at the Robinson’s Midtown Manila.

The presence of Pacquiao, who submitted his application a month ago, is not certain because he is on a seven-city tour to promote his upcoming WBO welterweight title defense against Chris Algieri.

But the Gen. Santos native has already secured his inclusion as a new member KIA Motors, which he will also serve as head coach. The expansion team will be known as “KIA Kamao” in the professional league.

Fil-Am Stanley Pringle, a 27-year-old from Pennsylvania State University, is expected to emerge as no. 1 overall to be taken by Globalport.

He will be joining veteran guard Alex Cabagnot and sophomore Terrence Romeo in Batang Pier, a team that finished last in the previous three conferences.

“He is fit for our team. He can complement Terrence (Romeo) and Alex (Cabagnot). He is already a proven player, that’s why for me he is the most qualified to be no. 1 pick,” said Globalport head coach Pido Jarencio.

Others expected to be picked in the first round are Fil-Italian guard Chris Banchero and Gilas cadet player Kevin Alas, former Letran skipper Jonathan Belorio, who hopes to join fellow Zamboangueños Mark Barocca, RR Garcia and Rudy Lingganay in the pro league.

Also in the list are Gilas cadets Jake Pascual, Ronald Pascual, and Matthew Rosser Ganuelas, who all played with the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA D-League.

They were also teammates in the Sinag Pilipinas, which won the gold in the Myanmar Southeast Asian Games last December.

Unknown players who may surprise many in the second round are Ritchie Paul Gutierrez, the youngest son of Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama, and Rene Pacquiao, a cousin of Manny. FCC
