THIS year’s secondary division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball competition will have a bigger field with the addition of four other teams.

Seeing action this year are Sacred Heart School-Ateneo De Cebu, which will field a boys and girls team, Cebu Eastern College (CEC) girls team and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) boys team.

“This is a very good development because it shows that volleyball is growing and that several schools are already showing interest in putting up high school teams,” said tournament manager Ryan Aznar.

Aznar added that in the past tournaments, they had fewer teams.

“CEC only fielded a basketball team before and now they are sending in a girls volleyball team,”said Aznar.

Competing for the girls’ title this year are reigning champion Southwestern University (SWU), University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), University of San Carlos (USC), University of Cebu (UC), SHS-ADC and CEC.

The participating teams in the boys side are USC, USJ-R, USPF, Don Bosco Technological Center, CIT-U and SHS-ADC.

“We are thankful for the kind of support and attention the schools have given to their secondary division teams,” said Aznar.

Meanwhile, during the collegiate competition the other day at the Aznar Coliseum, last year’s runner-up, the USPF men’s team started strong as defeating CIT-U in five sets, 25-21, 25-12, 23-25, 25-16, while the USC men’s team won against UC, 25-17, 28-26, 25-16.

Games will resume this Saturday with games in the secondary division.

The girls USC team will play the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo De Cebu, followed by the match between USPF and CEC.

USJ-R will challenge the defending girls champion SWU in the morning game.

The boys’ teams will see action in the afternoon wuth USJ-R facing SHS-ADC in the first game, followed by the USPF -DBTC match. USC and CIT-U will cap the day’s scheduled matches.

This year’s edition will follow a single robin format and will be held every weekend. It will run until Oct. 26.
