THE BATANG Gilas fought to the bitter end before bombing out of the 23rd Fiba Asia Under-18 Championship in Doha, Qatar after losing to Chinese Taipei in a barnburner.
The Batang Gilas or the RP Boys Under-18 National squad lost to Chinese-Taipei in a close quarterfinal game, 90-86, last Tuesday night.
The Batang Gilas started out swinging and saw themselves ahead 29-25 after one period.
However, Chinese-Taipei had a strong second quarter and outscored the Philippines, 30-22, for a 55-51 lead at halftime.
The Philippines kept it close and was just down by a single point, 75-74, going into the final period.
The game was still up for grabs in the fourth quarter with both teams changing leads for most of the period. Cebuano Paul Desiderio made a basket to tie the ballgame at 86-86 with 1:18 left.
Ming Yi Lin, however, would hit a crucial three pointer to put Chinese-Taipei ahead, 89-86, with a minute remaining.
The Philippines had a chance to take back the lead and win the game but missed two attempts, one by Cebuano Dave Yu and the other by Kobe Paras, with under 10 seconds in regulation.
Ssu han Tu split his free throws and give Chinese-Taipei a four point lead, 90-86.
With six seconds left, Joshua Caracut missed his shot which was rebounded by Paras, who also missed his attempt.
Tu led Chinese-Taipei with 23 points, while Mark Dyke led the Philippines with 26.
The Batang Gilas was playing Kazakhstan for placing yesterday as of press time.
