CEBUANO Paul Desiderio’s breakout game helped lead the Batang Gilas over Kazakhstan, 86-74, in the 23rd FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship at the Al-Gharafa in Doha, Qatar.

Desiderio, a former University of the Visayas Baby Green Lancers star, put in 19 points and eight rebounds to guide the Batang Gilas.

The Philippines had a strong start with an eight point lead after one quarter, 28-20. They pushed it further in the next period and ended up with a 16 point lead, 54-38, at halftime.

Kazakhstan found their groove in the third quarter and cut the lead down to just six points.

However, the Batang Gilas held on and has a chance to finish fifth in the tournament.

Alongside Desiderio, Ranbill Tongco had 13, while Kobe Paras, Mark Dyke and Jose Go IV chipped in 10 points each.

Alexandr Danilchenko led Kazakhstan with 18 points and nine rebounds.

The win came after the Philippines lost a heartbreaking, 90-86, quarterfinal encounter with Chinese Taipei.

It also earned Batang Gilas a spot in the battle for fifth place against Japan, which was played at press time last night.
