Magis Eagles rip Dragons apart

THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles remained as the only unbeaten team after an 88-44 win over the Cebu Eastern College Dragons in the high school division game of the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Last Thursday, the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars avenged their first-round loss to the defending champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 67-63, while the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers escaped the fourth quarter uprising of the USJ-R Baby Jaguars for a 66-60 win.

CEC offered only a strong first quarter before yielding to the superior Magis Eagles in the next three periods.

SHS-AdC turned a 19-17 lead to a 39-26 bubble at the half time break before they went all out and held the Dragons to just 18 points in the next two quarters to log their seventh straight win. The CEC losts its sixth game in seven games.

Jan-Jan Jaboneta topscored with 16, points, Piero Dominic Longa scored four triples of his 15 points and Joshua Sinclair finished with 10 points for the 2012 champions.

Richmond Buli-Buli made 17 and Ivan Agustine Mate added 14 for the 2010 champions CEC Dragons.

Last Thursday, UV had played well in the first three quarters before everything went downhill in the final period.

After trailing 18-16 in the opening canto, UV dropped searing runs in the next two quarters to build a 56-40 lead entering the final period. The run was highlighted by John Abad’s eight points and the four-point contributions of Alwin Aguirre and Nigerian Jeffakins Aguara.

Congolese Quentin Nzuzi started the uprising of the Jaguars as he sowed eight points to jumpstart a fourth quarter rally before wily center/forward Kevin Villafranca scored 10 points in the final three minutes that completed the comeback of USJ-R.

The Jaguars held UV to just seven points in the entire fourth quarter while scoring 27 points to pick their third win after seven games. The UV Green Lancers dropped to 4-4.
