CAGAYAN de Oro City’s Carlo Paalam defeated Askhat Zhusupov in the 49-kilo light flyweight finals to prevent host country Kazakhstan boxers from sweeping the 5th President’s Cup International Boxing Tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan last Sunday.
The 19-year-old Paalam was the lone foreign entry to win a gold medal by beating the crowd favorite Zhusupov on points, denying Kazakhstan from winning all 13 gold medals in the event that was participated in by 113 male and female boxers from 10 countries.
Uzbekistan, Rusia, India and Korea managed to win one silver each while the Philippines also had one courtesy of veteran Mario Fernandez.
Fernandez lost to World Series of Boxing and AIBA Pro Boxing campaigner Ilyas Suleymenov for the gold medal in the bantamweight division.
