THE University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers turned a hotly contested first half into a one-sided affair following an 88-69 win over the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves to take the lead in the high school competition of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) 2017 basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
The defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, meanwhile, needed the sizzling hot game of John Benedict Yu in the opening quarter to gain control of the game and beat the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens, 78-55, to gain a share of the leadership.
Today, college defending champions UV Green Lancers are looking to bounce back from its first game fumble, when they face the reinvigorated University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in the main game at 5:30 p.m., while the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors shoot for their third win when they face the winless CIT-U Widcats at the 4 p.m. game.
The UC Baby Webmasters will be shooting to bounce from an opening day loss against the USC Baby Warriors at 1 p.m., while the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras face the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars. Both teams eye a share of the lead in the high school division.
In yesterday’s match, the Greywolves gave UV a tough fight in the first 20 minutes but suddenly faltered when UV dropped a telling 8-0 run that put the Baby Lancers ahead 61-48.
The Greywolves managed to cut the lead down to 57-65 at the end of the third period behind the combined efforts of John Benedick Damolo and Christian Boyboy.
However, JJ Rosete suddenly caught fire and scored 10 of UV’s 17-5 blast in the final period to take away the fight from the Greywolves.
Rosete scored the game-high 19 points for UV, while rookie Mike Parilla added 10 as the Baby Lancers improved to 2-0. Damolo topscored for DBTC with 16 points. Jayson Abejo who was the hero behind DBTC’s strong first half, scored 15 points, while Jomari Ranuco made 14 as the Greywolves dropped to 1-1.
In the meantime, CIT-U had a good start keeping the Magis Eagles at bay for the first six minutes, until Jhon Benedict Yu and his cousin Patrick Wilson Yu combined for a telling 13-6 blitz to give the defending champions the momentum and the lead for good.
Although the Wildkittens managed to come to within a point twice in the second period, the Yus could not be denied as they sank a triple each on SHS-AdC’s 13-4 blast for a 38-28 lead at the bend.
CIT-U tried to recover and regain momentum but the crippling defense of the Magis Eagles still proved to be their biggest weapon as the Wildkittens slowly broke down to yield to a 23-point loss.
Patrick Yu topscored for SHS-AdC with 17 points, JB Yu scored 12 before he was pulled out in the game for an ankle injury in the third period as the Magis Eagles gained share of the leadership at 2-0. (RCM)
