THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers will face the sliding University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters at 6:45 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum as the race for the semifinal seats heats up in the college division of the 2017 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament.

UC is looking to score a repeat of its overtime win over the Panthers, 107-98, last Aug. 26 when Cameroonian center Frederick Elombi Ngoh dropped a season-high 43 points and 21 rebounds.

However, with the way USPF dominated the University of San Carlos Warriors last Sunday and with the Webmasters struggling in two consecutive losses in the second round, the Panthers may hand UC a surprise this time around.

UC has been predictable on offense, with Elombi taking some 35 percent of the team’s total attempts, with old hands Garciano Puerto, Justine Dacalos and John Calvin Jabello taking care of the rest.

In contrast, USPF is very unpredictable with its “pass-first-before shooting” mantra.

USPF’s offense evolves around Kenneth Cada, Edwin Villarta, Lugie Cuyos, Rodelio Cauba Jr. and Lyndon Colina, who are not just reliable in offense but in defense as well.

UC is currently ranked fourth with a 4-4 win-loss card, while USPF is at fifth place with a 3-5 slate. A win by USPF puts the two teams on equal footing at 4-5.

Meanwhile, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers will stake a step closer to an elimination round sweep as they face the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons in the 5:15 p.m. game.

Carrying a 7-0 win-loss record, UV is just two wins away from clinching a perfect elimination round record.

However, CEC, which is at 3-3, has the capacity to give the Baby Lancers their first loss and is also looking to boost its semifinal hopes. (RCM)
