TEAMS from the University of San Jose-Recoletos take on their counterparts from the University of Cebu in a crucial phase of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Baby Jaguars and Baby Webmasters will face off to determine who will face No.2 seed and four-time champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles in the semifinal round, while the Webmasters will need to beat the Jaguars twice to make the final round of the collegiate division.
After the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers clinched an automatic slot to the finals by sweeping their elimination round matches, USJ-R and UC, which both finished the elimination round at third and fourth places, respectively, need to go through a knockout playoff match to determine who will face the Magis Eagles in the semifinals.
The Magis Eagles will enjoy a twice-to-beat edge against the winner of the USJ-R vs. UC match, and the winner advances to take on UV in the three-game finals series.
UC enjoys a “slight psychological advantage” over the Baby Jaguars because of its 74-70 elimination round win last Sept. 19.
In that match, the Baby Jaguars wasted double-digit leads in the second and early in the fourth period by allowing the Baby Webmasters to drop a 29-10 blitz.
USJ-R Coach Bong Pineda will try to maximize the performance of his towering center Arnold Dave Ando and the outside games of John Kirck Gonzaga, Theo Gabriel Ranara and Jude Benedict Teleron to eliminate the Baby Webmasters. UC mentor Joevir Samonte will rely on Virlou Orquez, John Bryl Cuyos, Allen Peligrino, Miguelito Jusay and the steady quarterbacking of Yannick Enriquez.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars and the Webmasters will face off for the third time this season.
UC defeated the Jaguars, 87-85, last Sept. 2 and USJ-R returned the favor with an 87-83 win last Sept. 23.
However, UC landed in the third spot, while USJ-R finished at No. 2 to earn a twice-to-beat edge in the college semifinal round.
Cameroonian center Frederick Elombi will need help from the local players to beat the Jaguars.
The Webmasters also need to counter the run-and-gun game and rebounding of the Jaguars. (RSC)
