DEFENDING champion University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors forced a 1-1 draw against the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers to stay on top of the standings in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s football tournament at the Cebu City Sports Center football pitch yesterday.

USC’s Mark Veloso scored a looping header off a teammate’s cross to make it 1-1 in the 71st minute, foiling the Panthers’ bid for a second straight win.

The Panthers drew first blood at the 24th minute courtesy of Emil Gumba before the action got physical towards the end of the first half.

USC’s John Reevo Jumawan was given a red card after being called for a punching foul in a commotion with Jayson Devivar in the 32nd minute. Devivar and Mark Dave Ordiales each got a yellow card.

The Warriors stay on top with eight points from two wins, two draws and two losses, while the Panthers is at fourth place with six points from one win, three draws and one lose.

The University of Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of San Jose- Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars finished with a scoreless draw in the second game.

The Green Lancers and Jaguars had goal attempts in the second half but no team could convert.

UV’s Kenneth John Vargas showed his dribbling skills, splitting three defenders to get a shot at the goal but USJ-R’s defense was quick to recover to black his attempt in the 86th minute.

USJ-R’s Neil Ryant Miñoza also had an attempt at the 85th minute but it went straight to the hands of UV’s goalie.

The Green Lancers stand in second place with eight points from two wins, two draws and two losses, while the Jaguars are at third with seven points from one win and four draws. (RSC)
