Gonzales saves Sharks with buzzer-beating trey

Thursday, October 12, 2017

MARLON Gonzales scored only four points but his buzzer-beating 3-pointer helped the Accenture Sharks beat defending champions Convergys Converters, 64-61, in overtime in Game 1 of the E-League best-of-3 semifinal series last Saturday at the City Sports Club Cebu.

The game was going the Converters’ way and they had the ball with the score tied at 61 in overtime.

However, Jaime Pacquiao made an errant inbound pass intended for Franz Dysam. Giovannie Inez picked up the loose ball and made a forward pass to Gonzales, who quickly flipped the leather for the winning basket.

Accenture found themselves trailing for most part of the game but the team’s resilience allowed the Sharks to mount a comeback.

After trailing by six in the first two quarters, the Sharks managed to outscore Convergys, 29-23, in the next two quarters to even the score at 53 at the end of the regulation period.

Archie Batua topscored for Accenture with 15 points and Ryan Veloso added 10 points. Dysam scored the game-high 24 points and Pacquiao finished with 17 markers for Convergys.

Meanwhile, the Teleperformance All-Stars took a step closer towards the finals following a 75-54 win over the Lexmark Stallions in the other Elite Classic semis match.

Rahne Laborte and Karl Ocañada scored 13 points each for the All-Stars, while Jake Pia made 11 points and Sylvester Millevo finished with 10 points for Lexmark.

The Tech Mahindra Tech Mighties and The Results Spartans meanwhile advanced to the semifinal round after winning the knockout playoffs match of the Evo League competition.

The Tech Mighties defeated the ASI Hardbacks, 54-41, while the Spartans eliminated Optum Knights, 68-62. (RCM)
