GLOBAL Cebu FC will ride on its late-game heroics as it takes on FC Meralco Manila in the second leg of the Philippine Football League semifinal series at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Global Cebu won the first leg, 2-1, at the same venue, thanks to late goals by Wesley Hikaru Minegishi in injury time.
Despite winning the first leg, Global Cebu FC needs to be cautious as FC Meralco only needs to win by 1-0 to to win the series on away goals. Global Cebu was the “host” of the first leg, while Meralco is the host of the second leg. A 2-1 win by Meralco will see both teams equal on aggregate and on away goals, sending the match to extra time.
However, a scoreless draw will see Global Cebu advance to the final against the winner of the Kaya FC vs. Ceres match. A berth in the finals also means a slot in the AFC Cup for Global.
The AFC Cup is an international club competition that in the past few years Global, Kaya, and Ceres have played in. No Filipino club has ever qualified for the AFC Champions League, where the strongest Asian clubs from the best Asian nations play.
The Sparks are determined to make amends for the late meltdown last Saturday that saw the team concede two goals in the 90th and 93rd minutes.
“We finished on top of the league for a reason. They scored two goals but overall we were the better team. If we can fix the mistakes and read the game better, then we can make it to the final, but it won’t be easy.”
Skipper Simon Greatwich also expressed his frustration but was pleased with the performance of the squad as a whole. (ML)
