Fun, food, booze in Cebu Marathon

THE 11th Cebu Marathon promises to bring a lively, exciting and festive feel for over 5,000 participants when the race fires off tomorrow at the Cebu Business Park.

A total of 5,081 runners will pound Cebu City’s roads for the race, which features the 42-kilometer, 21K, 10K and 5K categories.

“We’re all set. To the runners, expect a lively, very exciting and festive race,” said Kenneth Casquejo, president of Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC), the group behind the race.

Casquejo said there will be entertainment along the route and the 18 water stations manned by volunteers and private companies will also have exciting activities.

“Councilor Joel Garganera has tapped 50 members of the LGBT community for entertainment at their water station. Kawasaki-Motor Ace will put a Star Wars cosplayer at their water station and Arbee’s will have entertainers and food,” he said.

Casquejo said that Cebu Province will also feature a Festival of Lights, Sinulog dancers and beats, and bands.

Organizers will also bring back the tradition of offering lechon along the route for the 42K participants. The 42K finishers will also get free beer at the finish line.

The race has recorded the most number of participants in the 42K and 21K categories since its start in 2008. The 42K category drew 1,895 participants and the 21K has 2,200 registrants.

Finishers in the 21K and 42K categories will receive shirts and medals.

Around 1,000 personnel and volunteers are involved in the race to assure the safety of the runners and make it an enjoyable run for all.

A total of 177 policemen from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and representatives from 18 barangays will man the streets to assure the safety of participants. Organizers assured there will be enough marshals on the route.

The Philippine Heart Association- Cebu Chapter will lead the medics’ team together with different groups.

A total of P419,000 in cash prizes will be given to the winners in all the categories. The Top 10 in the 42K local will be awarded, while Top 5 in the 21K, 10K and 5K will get cash prizes. All the categories will have the men’s and women’s division. For the foreign division only the Top 3 in the 42K will get cash prizes.

Cebu’s Rafael Pescos of Spectrum Runners Club will be defending his crown in the 42K men’s division. The other contenders from Cebu are four-time champion Noel Tillor, Michael Largo and Azlan Pagay, among others.

In the women’s 42K race, Lizane Abella of Mingalanilla, Cebu and Cebu-based Ruffa Sorongon of Sultan Kudarat are the the contenders from Cebu.

The race is expected to have runners from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. There are also runners from Australia, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Switzerland, China, Germany, Denmark, France, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Singapore, Taiwan, and USA.

With over 5,000 participants, the organizers will also attempt a record for the most number of people blowing whistles, keeping time with the Sinulog beat.

The run, which is part of the activities for the Sinulog Festival, will kick off with the 42K at 3 a.m. followed by the 21K participants at 4 a.m. The 10K and 5K categories will start at 4:50 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Aside from the entertainment along the route, there will be activities at the finish area and a raffle draw with prizes from the event sponsor.
