BARKLEY Eboña showed a ton of heart, never gave up on the play, and hustled his way to a game-winning putback to lift the Cebu Landmasters/Bogo, 77-76, over PBA D-League squad Marinerong Pinoy last night in the final day of the elimination round of the Cebu City Sinulog Cup 2018 – Basketball Invitational at the Cebu Coliseum.
With 15.3 seconds left in the final quarter and down by a point, the Landmasters had a chance to win it with one more play. The ball went to John Reel Saycon’s hands, but he missed his attempt. Eboña leaped over the defenders for an offensive rebound and a putback, but he too was unsuccessful. The lanky forward somehow got another offensive board and this time his putback bounced off the board and into the net.
The Landmasters completed a sweep in the elimination round after winning all four of its games.
The Landmasters led by as much as 22 points in the third quarter. But somehow, after a poor showing from the charity stripe and the three-point shots by Marinerong Pinoy, the Landmasters was down by a point with a three-pointer by Kyle Toth with 57.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Landmasters got lucky as Marinerong Pinoy made a crucial mistake from an inbound pass by John Lopez down to Gabriel Banal was way off and went out of bounds, paving way for one more play by the Landmasters.
Eboña, who made the biggest play of the night, had 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals. Willam McAloney and Ferdinand Lusdoc led the Landmasters with 12 points apiece.
Billy Robles was Marinerong Pinoy’s top scorer with 15 points along with four boards and a steal, while big man Philip Paredez added 10.
Earlier, University of Cebu (UC)/M. Lhuillier outclassed University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R)/May Abohan, 71-57. Frederick Elombi came up huge for UC with 18 points, 18 rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block. Ruben Ludovice also logged a double-double with 15 markers and 10 boards. Joren Tagudin and John Calvin Jabello were also in double-figure scoring with 13 and 11 respectively. Miguel Gastador led USJ-R with 17 points, while Fletcher Galvez added 13.
Marinerong Pinoy, UC and USJ-R finished with identical 2-2 standings. However, Marinerong Pinoy edged out UC by just a point on goal difference to advance to the finals in a rematch against the Landmasters today at 5:30 p.m. (EKA)
