Cebu vs. Manila-A A +A

CEBU Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion University of Cebu will have to brace for UAAP powerhouse and top seed Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in the semifinal round of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) on Nov. 30 at the San Juan Gym.
Ateneo eliminated Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) Cardinals, 65-56, last Tuesday in its quarterfinal round assignment.
The back-to-back UAAP champion showed its ability to climb back from a huge deficit behind the mammoth efforts of swingman Kirk Long, who scored 23 points on top of four rebounds and two steals.
Ateneo will be shooting for its third PCCL title, while UC is making its first trip to the semifinal round of the competition that gathers the different collegiate champions around the country.
“As we expected, Ateneo will be our opponent in the semifinal round,” said UC head coach Roehl Gomez, whose team will be leaving for Manila on Nov. 29.
Gomez, who wanted to be in Manila three days before their game, said Nov. 29 is good enough.
“At least we were given the chance to be in Manila a day before the game. I was looking to leave on Nov. 28 but we can’t always get what we want. So that date is good enough,” said Gomez, whose team played on the day it arrived in Manila last year.
Gomez noted that Ateneo put a premium on defense as shown in its previous two wins—76-66 over the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates last Tuesday and 65-56 over the Cardinals.
The 70.5 points per game average of Ateneo pales in comparison to UC’s 89.5 points in its two previous wins.
However, Gomez admitted the teams the Blue Eagles faced were tougher. UC defeated the University of Iloilo and the University of San Carlos in the first two games.
Both games were played at the Cebu Coliseum, UC’s homecourt.
