THE eighth edition of the Shakeys Girls Volleyball League will kick off this afternoon at the Aznar Coliseum.
The 10-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champion, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), will try to retain its dominance in the league against archrival Pajo National High School.
Aside from the two, another team expected to make a run for the title is the Catmon elementary girls team of coach Vilma Veloso.
“This is our first time to join the tournament and I am so happy with the invitation because it will give my team a good exposure and will help prepare them for the Palarong Pambansa,” Veloso said.
Catmon Elementary squad has won the Palarong Pambansa national title three times.
However, last year they weren’t able to retain their title and lost to Region 6.
“Dili ko mag expect ug maayo in this tournament. What I am after is the competitive exposure that my team will be getting. The more exposure they will get, the more confident they will become,” Veloso said
She added that it’s an honor to compete against Cebu’s top secondary teams.
“Through this tournament, I can measure asa kutob ilang skills. Then, we can work on the team’s weaknesses and improve their strengths,” Veloso said.
Aside from USPF, Pajo and Catmon, the other teams playing in the Cebu eliminations are Don Gerardo National High School, Colegio dela Immaculada Concepcion-Mandaue, Paref-Southcrest, University of San Carlos, Liloan National High School, Abellana National School and University of San Jose-Recoletos.
The champion team will represent Cebu in the Shakey’s V League Nationals: Battle of Champions on April 4 to 9 at the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod in Bacolod City.
