LITTLE-known player Jude Tabotabo made his presence felt in the DRB Sports Men’s Open after pulling off the biggest upset yesterday at the Pardo Tennis Courts.
The 15-year-old Tabotabo, who has long been a Palarong Pambansa campaigner since his elementary days, ousted No. 4 seed Christian Tionco, 10-7, to advance to the semifinal round.
Tabotabo, a student of Tuburan National High School, was supported by the town mayor
Aljun Diamante, but has been hiding behind the shadows of some of Cebu’s top junior players.
Yesterday was his chance to shine.
“He played really well and held a steady game to defeat Tiongco,” said organizer Fritz Tabura.
Tiongco used to be one of Cebu’s top junior netters.
With the win, Tabotabo is up for a tall order against No. 1 RJ Abarquez. Abarquez easily made it to the next round with a 10-3 win over Jun Tabura.
University of San Jose-Recoletos’ Kennex Abadia, on the other hand, defeated teammate Jayvee Canoy, 10-4, while John Francis Largo defeated Amiel Aya-ay, 10-3. Abadia and Largo will face off in the semifinals.
