CPAs compete in battle of wits in chess tourney

CEBU accountants will take a break from scrambling numbers as they pit wits against each other in the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Picpa) Sinulog Open Chess Team Tournament on Jan. 24 and 25 at the 2nd Level of SM City Cebu.

Picpa-Cebu chapter president Ipher Tabañag is upbeat about the upcoming tournament which will field members in a team that is also made up of top notch chess players.

MARK MAGSAYO, one of the projected stars of Philippine boxing, will get his toughest test in Pinoy Pride 29 – “Fist of Fury” on Feb. 7 at the University of South Eastern Philippines (USEP). Magsayo, 18, will face former Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) super bantamweight champion Sukkasem Kietyongyuth.

Kietyongyuth has a respectable slate of 13-3 with eight knockouts. He has fought some respectable fighters, the likes of World Boxing Organization (WBO) No. 7 ranked featherweight Mark Gil Melligen and WBO No. 11 ranked lightweight Ik Yang.

KENYAN Philip Ronoh finally bagged the title in his fourth try, finishing the Cebu City Marathon in 2 hours, 53 minutes and 28 seconds to rule the men’s division yesterday at the Cebu IT Park.

“In this sport you have to try and try until you succeed. Because in marathon, anything can happen, anything can affect your performance,” Ronoh told Sun.Star Cebu after the race. “I run on my own pace and I was able to get the lead in the 33K of the race.”

2014 straggler finishes race at own pace

LAST year’s straggler Sherwin Paran, who suffered a shin splint on his left knee and a swollen right runner’s knee in 2014, completed his 42K run in 4:33 and dedicated it to Trestel Tan, the bandit runner who helped him finish the event last year in over seven hours.

“I sent Trestel a message about how I wanted him to be here so that we can run together,” said Paran.
