Mendoza: June, Greg put Cebu back in limelight

Monday, July 7, 2014 - 09:01 p.m.

WITH June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter sweeping the major honors in the 2014 PBA last week, one thing is certain: The future of basketball is truly tall. Yes, you got that right. Not “truely” but truly. And this is not to make further fun of Batangas Gov. Vilma “Ate Vi” Santos, whose supposed for-private-use-only “truely” note to Kris Aquino went viral on Kris’ recklessness that triggered vicious bashing from spelling-conscious netizens.

Limpag: Hobbled South Americans vs. Europe

Sunday, July 6, 2014 - 09:26 p.m.

LET me gloat a bit. In a previous column, I picked Brazil over Colombia, Germany over France, Argentina over Belgium and the Netherlands over Costa Rica and so far, I’m 100 percent correct. I even guessed it right that James Rodriguez would score and that Colombia would still lose to the host.

If you say that those were just lucky guesses, you are right. Besides, those were easy picks made by my spirit-fueled crystal ball. I was hoping, though, that I’d be wrong in the Costa Rica vs. Netherlands match and that the Cinderella run of the South American country would continue.

Bernard inocentes S. Garces Contributor

I’M a football idiot. I don’t know how to play the sport, but it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the game. A yellow or a red card means the same thing to me. But I love how the crowd erupts! Sporty weekend

Saturday, July 5, 2014 - 11:42 p.m.

WHAT a weekend for international sports!

Brazil hosted four sets of World Cup quarterfinal games. Germany and Brazil are through. Early this morning, it’s possible that the Dutch and Argentinians advanced. What a final four. Neymar? That’s sad. I watched the replay of the knee kick to his back by Juan Zuniga and it looked intentional. Who flies on air with a knee bent straight to someone’s back? Neymar’s the best player and he was surely a marked man. Now, he’s out. Same with Thiago Silva. Too bad for the hosts. This might become a Germany-Argentina final next Sunday.
