SWU duo falters in Pintaflores

THE Southwestern University may have defeated the erstwhile defending champion in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) but it could not seem to squeeze their way in out-of-town competitions.

After a strong start that saw them win their first two games in the Pintaflores Festival beach volleyball competitions, the SWU duo of Lorie Mae Layno and Danika Gendrauli bombed out of the tournament after losing their next two matches.

SWU lost the aggressiveness they showed in their victories and lost to University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 21-10, and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, 21-17, in their last match to bid the tournament goodbye.

It was nowhere near their impressive performances against Ateneo de Manila University, 21-17 and Sipaway 21-2.

The loss came at the heels of their loss in the volleyball competition in the University Games last week in Iloilo City.

In the Cesafi, the two towed SWU to upending the University of Southern Philippines Foundation in the finals last month.

SWU is also trying to make its way back up the beach volleyball ladder and has started preparing for the beach volleyball season next summer as early as now.

SWU is the only team in the whole country to have won four national titles in the country’s premiere beach volleyball competition.

They lost a chance to win another national title last year after Gendrauli and Layno, who were still freshmen then, failed to advance to the Boracay leg.
