Top-notch Team B

PTT Fuels-University of the Visayas team B is as potent as its Team A.

The Lion Tiger University of Southern Philippines Foundation learned this the hard way as UV won, 87-75, in the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partners Cup yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the other collegiate game, Jayson Nudalo had 14 points to tow the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) over the University of San Carlos, 77-64.

UV’s second stringers finally got to see action and with the barangayan format—a different set of players must play in the first three periods—they got longer playing time.

The first period started off slowly with both teams failing to score in the first four minutes. USPF struck first and led, 11-6. However, experience prevailed as UV caught up at 14 after Marl Senires’ trey.

“They may be my team B but they are not inexperienced,” said UV head coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug. During the regular Cesafi season, when the main squad could not take part in other leagues, the Team B was the one that got sent to the invitationals, so in a way, they have experience,” said Cabahug.

In the second period, rookies Emman Calo, John Abad and Filipino-American Rene Saycon powered UV to a blistering run as they showered triples for a 41-27 lead,

Pivot man Adrian Lao led UV with 12 points, while Saycon, who is highly-touted to take after Greg Slaughter, added eight points--all in the second period.

The PTT-UV Baby Lancers, however, weren’t as lucky as they lost to the Enervon C-University of Cebu Baby Webmasters, 89-83.

The Ave Maria Park and Sanctuary-USJ-R Baby Jaguars, on the other hand, trounced the San Marino-USC, 90-79.

June Go led USJ-R with 19 points, while Alistair Escatron had 13.

This is the first time that the juniors division is added in the Partners Cup.
