Triumphant return

AFTER skipping last Sunday’s race, Simon Losiaboi and Mary Grace delos Santos are back to what they do best—winning the elite divisions.

The two did it again in the St. Ignatius 10K at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Campus in Mandaue City, crossing the finish line way ahead of their rivals.

Losiaboi, who skipped last Sunday’s Run For Kids 15K due to an injury, won the men’s division in 33:56, almost one and a half minutes faster than second placer Riez Enriquez, while Robert Daang took third at 34:47. Dandy Maturan finished fourth at 37:01, beating Charlie Berberio by 10 seconds.

In the women’s 10K, delos Santos, who joined the Milo Marathon Gen. Santos leg last Sunday, again finished uncontested as she finished in 38:05.

It took almost seven minutes before another woman crossed the finish line as Mereeis Ramirez finished second at 44:59. Melinda Ponce was a distant third at 51:43. Mizraym Capangpangan (52:31) and Thea Carroll (56:00) took the fourth and fifth spots.

Veteran marathoner Dr. Yong Larrazabal III took the 10K alumni title after setting a personal best of 43:57. Arnold Go finished 14 seconds behind for second, while Manuel Zosa III (48:13), Mark Anthony Longinos (50:09) and Jofranz Cañizares (52:26) made the top five.

The 10K battle may have been one-sided, but it was a different story in the 5K men’s open as only three seconds separated the top two. John Philip Duenas finished first in 15:52, while Joel Delposo was second at 15:55. Jory Ycong (16:01), Rolan Batiancila (16:25) and Michael Estrera (16:33) also finished in the top five.

Mary Joy Tabal, who won last week’s Run For Kids in the absence of delos Santos, got back to 5k and won in 18:32, more than a minute faster than second placer Joeyry Lee.

Other winners were Mario Sala in the 5K faculty division and Elyah Dignos and Lorna Olarita in the 3K divisions.

Zachary Huang also won the 3K male students division, while Layde Remedio won the female students category.
