Tuburan unscathed after quake

AN INTENSITY 4 earthquake shook the northern Cebu town of Tuburan early yesterday morning, with slight tremors being felt in Cebu City and Negros Oriental Province.

No damage was reported, though, said Rolando Montañez, science research specialist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs), based in Lapu-Lapu City.

Montañez yesterday said the earthquake, which started around 8:20 a.m., was strongly felt about five kilometers southeast of Tuburan town.

Tuburan, being the location of the epicenter, felt the full force of the earthquake. But Montañez said intensity 4 tremors are not capable of damaging structures such as buildings.

“At intensity 4, you can only feel furniture or anything movable move slightly,” said Montañez.

Intensity 3 tremors were felt in Cebu City and nearby towns, while Kanlaon City in Negros Oriental felt the slight tail end of the earthquake.

Montañez said that during the earthquake, no tsunami or tidal waves were felt in nearby Tuburan as the magnitude of the tremor could not produce enough force to create a tidal wave.
