UC, USJ-R start hunt

THE University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars will start their quest for a spot in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League in Cebu City today, while the University of San Carlos (USC) is on the verge of kissing their chance goodbye in Bacolod City.

The Warriors, the second runner-up in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. lost to Arellano University Chiefs, 79-74 and are now on the verge of losing the chance to advance to the Sweet 16 as they played the host, the Western Negros University Mustangs, at press time yesterday.

The Mustangs had a walk in the park victory over Mindanao champions Holy Trinity College Wildcats, 93-77, in their first game.

Adrian Celada topped Arellano scorers with 21 points, while Giovanni Padillo scored 23 for the losing Warriors. Arellano is the fifth-ranked team in the NCAA.
Today, the Webmasters and the Jaguars will try to get their rhythm early when they play the visiting squads.

The Jaguars, the fourth placer of the 2009 Cesafi tournament, will play the dangerous San Sebastian College-Cavite Baycats, the champions of the Naascu, at 5:30 p.m.
UC, the 2009 season bridesmaid, will then face the UAAP fifth placer Adamson University Soaring Falcons in the main match at 7 p.m in the VisMin-MM Zonals B matches at the Cebu Coliseum.

Two slots to the Round of Sweet 16 are up for grabs in two VisMin-MM Zonals competition.

One of the interesting match-ups in tonight’s main game is between the 6’10” Junmar Fajardo of UC and the 6’6” Jan Colina.

Colina is a former UC Baby Webmaster prized center who was named high school MVP back in the 2003-2004 Cesafi season.
