Webmasters bag Sweet 16 slot

THE University of Cebu Webmasters got a shot in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Sweet 16 round after picking up two victories to bounce back from their first day debacle of the PCCL Cebu Zonals.

The Webmasters pulled off a 74-66 win over the San Sebastian College Baycats Saturday night and scored a 103-86 victory over the University of San Jose-Recoletos at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

In last Saturday’s game, the Webmasters banked on the three-point savvy of Robinson Mohammad, who badgered the basket to help UC build up a good lead en route to their victory over the two-time Naascu champions.

Close

It was a close game at the start that saw both teams in several deadlocks after SSC took a 15-13 at the first frame.

In the second period, the Webmasters scorched hot from the perimeter with Mohammad scoring three triples. Kelvin Quilantang and Jansen Abella also hit their marks as UC broke away with a 10-point lead 37-27, at the turn.

SSC closed in, 44-41 in the third period behind a 14-7 run but UC’s Mikey Gomez ended it with another booming three-pointer that got UC back on its feet.

June Mar Fajardo, whose presence was almost not felt in their first game, showed his grit once more in the shaded area and led the UC scorers with 23 points.

Mohammad scored 19 on six triples and a free throw, to help UC keep its PCCL dream alive.

Against USJ-R yesterday, Fajardo and Kelvin Juliane steered the team to victory as they scored 26 points each, while Mohammad had 16.

With the win, UC boosted made it to the Sweet 16 round of the PCCL.

Cesafi nine-time champion, University of the Visayas earned an automatic slot by virtue of their Cesafi title, while University of San Carlos Warriors advanced after placing second in the Bacolod Zonals.

The top two will advance to the Sweet 16 round.

Late last night, Adamson and SSC were fighting for the final spot for the Sweet 16 round.
