MORE than one trademark application is usually filed to ensure comprehensive protection of the mark. One application is filed for the word mark to appropriate the name, regardless of design, while another application is filed to protect the particular design of the mark (comprising the font, style and color) to prevent others from copying the overall appearance of the mark (while using a different word just to confuse the consumer).

Further, an application to protect the use of the mark in products is also different from the application for the use of the same mark for services. Likewise, marks used on different products may require different applications depending on the grouping of the goods and services under the law.
