Cybersecurity

I RECENTLY stumbled on this article from Gizmodo and after reading through it, I am inclined to agree with the point there. As our lives become a lot more connected into the interwebs, there’s a greater chance of compromising our security in cyberland. A dooms day scenario would probably look like how it is in the TV series Revolution - no power, no communications. Everything’s back to the old age - candles or lamps, animal-based transportation. Horsepower becomes literal and not just some term referring to a combustion engine’s power rating.

I think, in the end, the take away from that article is that we all need to be more careful about how we put our lives into the internet. Cybersecurity is not just a concern for our governments to worry about but it does go down to the personal level. Almost every one of us have put our lives on the internet through our social media accounts - Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, and a plethora of others out there.

And whenever there’s talk of cybersecurity, I always think right away of passwords. Do you use common passwords that any social engineering hacker can get from you? Do you use passwords that can be hacked using dictionary based password-guessing software? How about passphrases? Oh, and let’s include in the mix 2-step authentication. Do you use that?

In reality, there’s really so much that we can do to secure ourselves online. A secure password for each of presences online is a start. Dare I say it to be the foundation. A soft and crumbly password will get your nowhere.

UI ala-Iron Man

Our current user interfaces for our computing needs still has two components - the keyboard and the mouse (or a trackpad or trackball). If you saw Minority Report and Iron Man, you’re probably dreaming of being able to interact with your computer on that scale. I know I would.

I’d really love it if we can actually be able to do that. Holographic interface. I dream of a day when we carry small cubes in our pockets or small devices the size of a solid-state drive that projects a holographic image in front of us where we can interact with the operating system. Facebook would be oh-so-much cooler by then.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Could this be the future of warfare and soldiering? I’m not sure but it sure looks cool, don’t you think?
