2nd Phoenix Open golfest set

A BRAND new car, P1 million cash, one-year supply of Phoenix Petroleum gasoline and lubricants and a motorcycle will be up for grabs as hole-in-one prizes in all par 3s.

This, when the 2nd Phoenix Open Golf Tournament tees off on March 6 at the Rancho Palos Verded Golf & Country Club in Mandug, Davao City.

Tournament chair Ed Herrera announced the holding of the event during a press conference at Dencio's Kamayan-Damosa branch Monday, saying the hole-in-one prizes are at stake at holes No. 2, 6, 11 and 17 in the 18-hole system team and individual competition.

Herrera said turnout of entries this year is expected to surpass last year's inaugural record of 180 considering participation of golfers from all over the country.

"We expect some 250 golfers from Manila, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga and other parts fo the region. But Davao City players still have the edge being the ones more familiar with the course," Herrera said. "In golf, however, anything can happen. You can't really predict who's going to win."

Trophies will be awarded to the team and individual champions and runners-up of the tournament organized as part of the Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

Registration is pegged at P3,000 per player and will start on February 12 at RPVGCC, Apo Golf and Country Club and Matina Golf Club. The fee is inclusive of one Cherry Mobile phone, golf cap and ball marker that will be received on tournament day.

Deadline of registration is at 5 p.m. on March 1. Late registrants will then have to pay P3,500.

According to Phoenix Philippines Foundation's Ben Sur, the golf tournament will benefit the company's core programs such as education, environment, health and safety, disaster relief and outreach.

"We are fast growing in terms of retail. It is our ambition to be No. 1 in 2010," Patonona said.
