Aquino: Breaking laws

EVER wonder why rules are created? Ever wonder why some of us obey it, and some break it? To whom are the rules created for? Can anyone be excused if he wasn't able to adhere with the so-called rules?

When our law professor asked us to read nine cases regarding mass media, I was appalled upon learning that some are just so plain stupid to break rules and making themselves vulnerable to shame, humiliation, or even mockery. It is like they created a fire that will cause them burns, fed a snake that will eventually bite.

May Vecina's case did cause distress to our government officials, to our countrymen, and most especially to the OFWs working in Saudi Arabia. Vecina was a simple OFW from Cotabato and worked as a domestic helper in Kuwait. Due to too much pressure by her employer who chained her to emotional violence and other forms of harassment like mental torture and psychological burden, she killed her employer's six-year-old son. No matter what angle we will look at, we cannot deny the fact that she killed an innocent child, that she broke the law.

I have a more obvious example of breaking laws or rules. In school, we are told not to use cell phones during class hours but some students, that includes me, still use our mobile phones hiding this inside our pockets, bags, or simply covering it up with a book or a notebook. Still, we cannot ignore the reality, that a school rule is violated.

Still we are caught up with the question "why laws are created?" Simple. Laws are created so that there will be order, there will be discipline, and there will be more freedom.

First let me discuss about order. Order will only take place if there is a framework, a standard, a principle to follow or to conform with. Take this analogy as an example. Imagine if everyone can drive in whatever lane or direction they want. That will surely cause a big collision or an alarming pile up of cars that will block everyone's way, right? That is one good reason why laws should be created. The same thing with discipline and freedom. We discipline ourselves to brush our teeth daily so we will have a freedom from toothaches and other dental problems. We have road rules; therefore there is a freedom to drive. Without rules we would be in ceaseless fear of accidents and road mishaps. With laws we have more freedom since we are assured that we are protected, with laws we are keep in check.

Good points? Maybe. But still I am left wondering why some people made rules with no thought of obeying them. To whom are the fingers pointing at? That is yours to discover.

Great points indeed. Where

Great points indeed. Where are the rule makers? Did they not in fact break rules themselves? Or are the people who make the rules in fact above all law breaking and have never disobeyed a rule that was in force.

There are some who accidentally break rules, no question at all about that, but as you said regarding cellphones in schools and the fact that you break the rules does that mean it is ok for you now to break other rules?

Where is the decision of what rules are OK to break and which ones are not? What are the consequences about breaking the no cellphone rule at school - will you lose the phone or will it just be confiscated for a short period.

The difference between breaking the cellphone rule and perhaps the more extreme cases like murdering someone... is this is more a moral rule that should be followed as opposed to a policy rule so using cellphones in school is OK?

Of course everybody knows that if you murder someone and you are caught, there will be severe consequences, but there are also consequences for using the cell phone in school so...... who then decides the rules and who decides the punishment and who decides what is worse than something else.

I know my choice of an example is a little extreme but I hope you get the point of where I am coming from. Maybe????
