PACE-SETTER Holiday Gym & Spa (HGS) marks its eighth year of campaigning for healthy living in Davao City.

HGS, being an industry leader in health and wellness, has indeed come a long way since owners Ronald and Gene Bangayan built the complex along F. Torres St. in 2003.

Ivy Guinto Fernandez, HGS chief operations officer, said the owners wanted to offer a one-stop shop for health and recreation, that's why aside from the spa, the gym was also constructed.

HGS is the first to have a covered jogging track, badminton courts, swimming pool, basketball court, boxing facility, coffee shop and beauty salon all in just one complex.

Eight years after it was established, HGS still enjoys the loyalty of its clients while more Mindanaoans as well as domestic and foreign tourists alike patronize its high quality service and modern facilities. Students as young as 13 to mothers, working professionals, and businessmen, among others, frequent HGS.

HGS offers different types of group exercise. It also has a wall climbing facility. At the Holiday Physical Therapy Center, rehab doctors are on standby to cater to different injuries or disabilities.

"I think our edge over other competitors is that we can address the need of our clients at once. When a client wants to box, an instructor is right there to assist him or her. We are most proud of our staff who have been trained by American Council on Exercise-certified trainers. All gym instructors are Physical Therapy graduates. Some are also licensed PTRP. With their course and educational background, they understand well how the human body works and what is the proper form, execution and purpose of exercises. They can also help injured clients recover and give them the proper exercises or therapy needed," Fernandez said.

HGS' group exercise instructors have also underwent proper training and some of them are also ACE-certified instructors.

Fernandez said, "We have been operating in Davao for eight years now. We believe that to be able to sustain this kind of business, a fitness center, will take lots of hard work, inspiring ideas, dedicated staff, supportive owners and most importantly, lots of prayers."

HGS Davao has eight gym instructors and fitness trainers, four front desk personnel, 10 group exercise instructors, five boxing instructors and eight support services. The Cebu branch also keeps the same number of staff.

Fernandez said HGS also offers reasonable rates.

A group of five to 10 persons can avail of 10 percent discount while a group of 11 to 20 persons can avail of 20 percent discount.

The membership packages include unlimited use of fitness center (including jogging track, boxing facilities), unlimited attendance to all group exercise classes with wide range of types of classes to choose from, personalized exercise program, exercise supervision from licensed, certified, and well-trained instructors, free use of sauna (during scheduled times), locker facilities and shower, free use of swimming pool, basketball courts, free use of wall climbing facilities (Monday to Friday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday - 3 p.m.-7 p.m.), free use of badminton courts from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, free days or weeks for every new referral enrolled, free body fat and fitness testing, free postural analysis and scoliosis screening, free nutritional counseling on scheduled days, discounts in badminton and other establishments like Elements Salon, Acculab, Penhaus, Linmarr Apartelle, Overdrive, Wheels N' More, Gerry's Grill, Blu Gre Coffee and Skin Doctors.

For non-member programs, one month regular club use is P2,000 per month, one month non-peak is P1,500 per month, youth rate 21-below is P900 per month and one day use rate is P200 per session. A 10-day package costs P1,500.

HGS holds promotional campaigns to attract would-be customers and at the same time highlight a health campaign like the National Diabetes Awareness Week, Children Cancer Month and Women's Health Month, among others.

Spa services, meanwhile, include spa and massage therapy, Shiatsu massage, Swedish oil massage, aromatherapy oil massage, Bentosa massage, foot massage, foot spa, foot massage & spa, stone massage and ear candling.

Living up to its reputation as a trail-blazer, HGS also has its own Holiday Water and Holiday Lite Ice Cream, 97 percent fat-free and sugar-free, that comes in vanilla, chocolate and green tea flavors.

HGS Davao's eighth anniversary celebration will kick-off with the Holiday Vertical run on July 31 at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. A 40-kilometer run for clients, members 5-on-5 basketball tournament and a Latin-inspired Holizumba party will also be featured.

A flu vaccination day is set on July 30 where Dabawenyos can avail of the vaccine at a cheaper cost.

HGS is open Mondays to Fridays at 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays at 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
