STARTING this month, in Shell stations across Mindanao including Davao City, consumers will fill up with new fuel products that contain a unique, patented cleaning system designed to destroy engine gunk (carbon deposits) in all three grades of gasoline.

Launched by Shell Philippines on June 6 at the Abreeza mall, the nitrogen-enriched gasoline addresses the increasing need for engine protection.

With advanced engine technologies coming to the market and with consumers holding on to their existing vehicles longer, it is becoming increasingly important for consumers to protect their vehicles, which is typically their second largest investment.

The new nitrogen-enriched cleaning system cleans up gunky build-up on intake valves and fuel injectors left by lower quality gasoline and then acts like a barrier to help protect critical engine parts from performance-robbing gunk.

Nitrogen is a key element within the active cleaning molecule in the new fuel. By enriching the cleaning molecule with nitrogen, it is not only more effective but is significantly more stable at the higher temperatures common in modern engines, such as direct fuel-injection gasoline engines. The increased stability helps the molecule work under much tougher engine conditions by resisting thermal breakdown better than conventional cleaning additives.

Called V-Power Nitro+, the better and higher grade version of V-Power line of fuels was built on over 100 years of research and development.

"We have around 200 passionate fuels scientists and specialists across the globe working on the fuels innovation, development and implementation to meet the evolving needs of customers and their cars," Mae Ascan, Shell Global Solutions fuel scientist, said

She said the same friction modifiers in race fuels they develop for Formula 1 cars were also used in the new Shell V-Power Nitro+ Gasoline.

She said their close working relationship with Ferrari provides them with an environment to test new fuels in extreme conditions, and gives them a better understanding of what will deliver improved power and performance.

The latest generation of premium performance fuels are Shell V-Power Nitro+ Gasoline (replacing Super Premium), Shell V-Power Nitro+ Racing (replacing V-Power), and Shell V-Power Nitro+ Diesel (replacing V-Power Diesel).

V-Power Nitro+ Racing is Shell's top-of-the-line gasoline designed to deliver higher performance benefits in octane-responsive engines.

The V-Power Nitro+ Gasoline, on the other hand, is enriched with friction modifiers designed to improve performance and to act instantly on the cylinders -- regarded as the heart of the engine (friction modifiers are developed to reduce friction in critical engine areas, helping the engine to deliver more power).

The new V-Power+ Diesel contains a powerful detergent technology developed to help prevent and clean up power-robbing diesel injector deposits. It is also formulated to protect engines against corrosion.

Shell Philippines' retail marketing manager Arlene Manalo said the Philippines is the third country in the world and first in Asia to see the introduction of the new premium performance fuels.

"With these new gasoline and diesel fuels, we have built on the innovative and successful platform established by our best-selling Shell V-Power fuels and developed new formulations, designed to improve performance and to act instantly in your engine," said Anthony Lawrence Yam, Shell Philippines vice president for retail.

"It's exciting to be able to bring this new product to the Philippine market and I believe we have succeeded in making a good product even better. I would encourage drivers to try it and see for themselves what it can do," Yam said.

With Shell's new fuel products, octane ratings have been retained such that the V-Power Nitro+ Gasoline is still at 93 and the V-Power Nitro+ Racing still at 97. Emissions standard for the V-Power Nitro+ line is still Euro 2.

While the fuels are much better and more powerful than the ones they replaced, Yam said, there will be no price difference.

Whether it's a new car with an advanced engine technology or an older one that is needed for continued use over the long haul, today's drivers need protection from engine gunk.

For drivers who simply expect the most from their vehicle's performance, especially those with vehicles whose manufacturers recommend or require a premium gasoline, Shell V-Power Nitro+ new formulation boasts of the highest concentration to clean an engine's intake valves.

Shell believes it is important to educate consumers that all gasoline products are not the same – high quality gasoline can make a difference in vehicles.

At Shell, they are dedicated to continuous product improvement and innovation, and helping consumers get the most out of every drop of gasoline.
