MulatPinoy asks Davao youth: What is your Social NetWorth?

-A A +A

Saturday, August 4, 2012

FACEBOOK. Teen pregnancy. Poverty. Gender equality. The 2013 elections. A new post on Tumblr. Whatever teenagers in Metro Manila are worried about, it probably concerns the youth in Davao too. And the youth of Davao are speaking up.

Mulat Pinoy brings the Social NetWorth Regional Youth Forums to Davao on August 29. The forum will start at 1:30 p.m. and will be held at the University of Mindanao, in the Auditorium of the DPT Building, Matina Campus, Matina, Davao City.

Through this forum, Mulat Pinoy aims to increase awareness about population and development among Davao’s youth. In addition, the forum will highlight the use of social media for advocacy work. Different speakers will discuss a variety of population–related topics. A talk show entitled The Popdev Scandal will feature James Lumanog of World Wildlife Fund, Rolando Borja of Family Planning Organization of the Philippines and representatives from local advocacy groups, talking about the causes they promote, the speakers will also talk about how they use social media to promote ideas and actions. In ‘Puro na lang sex!’, Ana Santos of Sex and Sensibilities will talk about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) topics, like knowing how your body works and how to take care of it, as well as knowing your rights as a human being. And finally, Social NetWorth will feature Stella Estremera of Sun.Star Davao, in a talk about responsible social media use. The forum is free and open to the public.

Social NetWorth was originally a four-day workshop held in Metro Manila in February 2012, attended by college students from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The workshop taught 24 participants the basics of population and development, a primer on social media, and the techniques of building their own advocacy campaign through social media.

To reach more Filipino youth, Mulat Pinoy is bringing Social NetWorth to the rest of the country as the Social NetWorth Regional Youth Forums. Mindanao is the first stop on August 29, to be followed by Visayas in October and Luzon in January.
