Manufacturing capable to produce RE products-A A +A

THE Philippine manufacturing sector is fully capable of developing capacity over the next decades to play a substantial role in manufacturing renewable energy projects.
A Greenpeace report titled "Green is Gold: How Renewable Energy can save us money and generate jobs" cited the strengths of the Philippine automotive and electronics sectors as indicative of manufacturing potential.
It said 256 automotive companies produce different parts, with 124 first-tier manufactures and 132 second and third-tier sub-contractors.
On the other hand, the competency of the electronics sector in the 1990s increased to a point where full assembly, test and delivery were possible and even local sourcing of materials with across the board downward integration and downstream capability improving.
This was a remarkable improvement in the 1970s when the local manufacturing was purely assembly and delivery, with even testing done abroad.
To improve existing renewable energy manufacturing expertise in-country, the report said there is already one crucial player - SunPower Philippines Manufacturing Ltd. -- whose solar cell production lines in the Philippines and global operations make it one of the important solar manufacturers in the world.
