ANOTHER employment agency based in Australia conducted series of trade tests recently in Tagum City to scout and hire skilled workers from the city.

Tim Hutchison, general manager for Projects of the OnServices Group, Australia's largest meat processing plant based in Brisbane, Queensland, personally supervised the trade test for deboning held at the Tagum City Slaughterhouse last April 16, which was also observed by Mayor Rey T. Uy.

Unlike previous trade tests for butchering in the city, it was the first trade test for deboning in the city and was participated by about 50 deboners, three of whom are females, from Tagum, Digos, Davao City and some areas in Davao Region.

Hutchison said in an interview that they intend to hire Tagum-based skilled workers and will soon be deployed in Australia to augment their working force.

He mentioned that they've been conducting trade tests in Pampanga before they decided to conduct the same in Tagum, which was prompted by a Tagum-trained butcher who encouraged them to come to Tagum.

Dr. Jesus G. Edullantes, city veterinarian, said the deboning skills will soon be included in the community skills training program spearheaded by the local government as an answer to the latest demand in Australia.

The said training program already produced 264 world-class butchers who are now working either in Australia or in Canada.

The city veterinarian also mentioned the local government is now planning to transfer the city's slaughterhouse from its present site in Tipaz, Barangay Magugpo East to the city-acquired property in Barangay Magdum.

Hutchison assured of his company's collaboration with the local government of Tagum in the years to come.

His company bought 25 pieces of cow's hind quarters (40 kilos each at P200 per kilo) at the Tagum's Public Market which were used in the actual trade test.

The said meat are then distributed to social centers in Tagum which included the Gloria Christi Regis Center for Abandoned Children, Home for the Aged and Tagum's jail and correctional facilities. (PR)
