570,000 tourists visit Davao-A A +A

A LOCAL tourism official on Tuesday said some 570,000 tourists came to Davao City from January to June 2013.
City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) officer-in-charge Lisette Marques told reporters that the turnout is "encouraging".
"The record is only for the half of the year. The city had an approximate 1.1 million visitors in 2012," Marques said.
She hopes that the increase influx of visitors will continue due to its positive effects to the local economy.
She explained that 10 percent or an estimated 100,000 of the 1.1 million visitors came in the month of August. If there are 100,000 tourists and they stay an average of 3 1/2 days here then spend an average of P4,000 per day, the city gains at least P1.4 billion.
Marques, however, said that tourism arrivals also affect society and the environment despite its positive impact on the economy.
She said that more tourists would further endanger the environment and that the host community is the ones affected. She added that locals also need to be given attention.
The CTOO chief also said she is confident that they will exceed the projected number of visitors for the month of August despite the bomb threats, advisories, and short preparation of the 28th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival.
