A DAVAO City councilor is pushing for the review of the city's tax ordinance in order to increase and maximize the collection of taxes.
“After the review of the Supplemental Budget 2 (SB 2), we will have a review of the tax ordinance and we will find out what the problem is,” Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, who chairs the committee on finance, ways, and means, said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao on Thursday.
He cited the lack of personnel as one of the problems plaguing the city's tax collection system.
"The massive development of the city should be complimented in terms of area and number of business sectors. This goes the same with having the same deployment of people to collect taxes. More businesses means more collectors," he said.
He added that he will also look into the possibility to adjust taxes that are being collected, adding that his committee will also review the incentives given to the investors of the city.
"We will see if (these incentives are) still enticing to the new investors or to see if there is a need to adjust them," he said.
Once everyhting has been polished, Dayanghirang is confident this will result to significant increase in the city's tax collection.
"If all of these have been cleared and polished, I am optimistic that there will be a 30 to 40 percent increase in the city's collection," he said.
It can be recalled that Dayanghirang urged the City Treasurers Office to step up its tax collection in the city to address the increasing demand for social services.
