City’s first food truck ready to serve

THE first food truck in Davao City is ready to serve your hungry stomachs.

Topsy Turvy Gourmet Toppings officially started its operation on September 19 parking in front of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) on Jacinto Street.

"Since we are just starting, our menu as of now includes three pork or chicken rice toppings - sweet and spicy, mushroom gravy, and Mongolian barbeque - and butterscotch and dark chocolate banana fritters. Our target market are the students therefore our prices are very affordable," said Topsy Turvy Gourmet Toppings owner Luigi Miguel E. Villanueva, 20, who is now in his junior year as an entrepreneur student at AdDU.

The rice toppings cost P39 each while the banana fritters is at P19.
Villanueva said they are presently developing new food choices and adding beverages to their menu. His mother, a chef, is assisting him in developing the menu.

"When I did my research for the business, around four or six months ago, I was trying to find out what kind of business has not yet arrived in Davao City, thus the idea of having a food truck. However, I was not able to kick-off right away since during that time I have no capital yet," he said.

He added that during the development phase of the business they did not know anyone who is developing food trucks.

Almost three weeks after he conducted his research, he found out that Gear Trend Repair Shop (GTRS) Auto Detailing, at Juna Subdivision in Matina is offering food trucks for rent. Villanueva took this opportunity and rented one of its truck. GTRS is owned by R.A. "King" Domingo, who designs and customizes food trucks.

Currently, they are processing permits with Traffic Management Council to know where else they can park the truck and make their products available to the general public.

"Having the food truck will allow us to do business during weekends, since we can sell to other places and not only at schools," Villanueva said.

Being a stand-out and a first in Davao City, the food truck received a good reception when it started.

The young businessman also sees this as not only his business venture but as a venue to gain experience.

"Many are questioning me why I started to have a business since our practicum program has yet to start during our senior year. However, I believe that experience is still the best to train us," said Villanueva.

The Turvy Gourmet Toppings food truck is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
