THE 17th City Council approved on first reading on Tuesday the proposed ordinance amending the provision on amusement tax exemptions of the 2005 Revenue Code of Davao City.
SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPHI) requested the City Council to include the scientific and educational exhibitions and installations, which cover the newly opened SM Science Discovery Center at SM Lanang Premier, from the list of activities exempted from the imposition of amusement tax.
According to the Section 59, paragraph (B) of Davao City Ordinance 158-05, series of 2005, or "The 2005 Revenue Code of the City of Davao," it states that the holding of "operas, concerts, dramas, recitals, paintings, and art exhibitions, flower shows, musical programs, literary and oratorical presentations except pop rock, or similar concerts not intended primarily for profit" are listed as among the activities that are exempted from amusement tax.
"SDC is technology-based, highly interactive science center with hands-on exhibits that allow each patron to be immersed in an interactive learning experience," SMPHI senior vice president Cecilia R. Patricio said in his letter to Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte.
Once approved by the City Council, the ordinance will be known as "An ordinance amending the provisions of section 59, paragraph (B) of Davao City Ordinance No. 158-05 series of 2005."
The item was referred jointly to the committees on Committees on Rules, Privileges, Laws, and Ordinances; Games and Amusement; Finance, Ways and Means, and Appropriation for committee hearing.
