DAVAO Boys' Town is all set to stage the grand re-launching of their pizzeria at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at their compound along Maa Road, this city.
Boys' Town executive director Fr. Alan Ross Banogon, SDB, speaking in Wednesday's Club 888 forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao, said the pizzeria will have a floor area of 100 square meters (sq.m.) and will feature a classic brick oven.
"Some P700,000 was poured into the rehabilitation of the pizzeria. Around P300,000 alone went into the making of the brick oven. The money came from our benefactors," Banogon said, adding the pizzeria will be one of the institution's income generating programs.
He said the pizzeria will help instill discipline among their staffs, who are orphans, street children, and abandoned or neglected children, on the food industry's food safety and standard.
"This will help the boys -- most of who are neglected, abandoned, and poor -- return to the society as useful and honest citizens. They will also be equipped to succeed in life," Banogon said.
The soft opening of the pizzeria was held last December 1. Currently, they are serving 14-inch thin crust pizzas in eight varieties at P200 to P350.
He said they serve Italian pizza since the one who trained their staffs and cooks is an Italian.
"In the future we are eyeing to also expand our menus with classic Italian dishes," Banogon said.
Aside from the pizzeria, they also have a rabbit breeding center, poultry farm, and vegetable and herb garden to help the children earn a living.
Boys' Town currently has 51 boys under their care who are being taught how to make pizza while their alumna who is 22 years old is the cook of the pizzeria.
"In the area, we are the only pizzeria available. Also just being located in the compound, we have a lower overhead and also the raw materials in Davao are cheaper making the price of our pizzas very affordable," Banogon said.
Their pizzeria is opened from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
