THE target to reach an employment rate of 98.2 percent or 2.22 million workforce in Davao Region by 2016 is possible, an official said.
The target is contained in the Regional Development Council's updated Davao Regional Development Plan (DRDP) 2014-2016, which was launched on December 13.
"The target is very high but it is possible. If all is well towards 2016, there is a possibility that we might surpass it," Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) assistant regional director Venerando C. Cebrano told Sun.Star Davao in an interview on Tuesday.
The labor status as of July 2013, showed the region has a labor force of roughly 2 million with an employment rate of 93.5 percent or 1.8 million persons and an unemployment rate of 9.5 percent.
Cebrano said one of the programs that will help reach the target is the Project JobsFit: The Dole 2020 Vision.
The project is a "labor market study which highlights the in-demand and hard-to-fill employment in key industries that are projected to be the main employment growth in the country in the next 10 years.
"Through the project, we help match the competence of our workforce as demanded by the economic situation," he said.
He said under the project there is the Labor Market Information wherein they gather information on the current situation and demands of the various industries and present it to the Department of Education (DepEd) and academe.
"The project will enable them to know and be updated on what the trends of the economy are. We propose that there is a change or upgrade in the curriculums to keep up with the demands. If we just leaves things just the way it is, then we will not move forward," Cebrano said.
The DRDP targets the employment rate for 2013 to be at 95.2 percent or 1.99 million persons employed.
