P1.9 billion set aside for DA-11 in 2014-A A +A

THE regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA 11) will get a total of P1.890 billion budget of the P10 billion national budget of the agency for 2014, an official reported yesterday.
In a 2014 Yearend Physical and Financial Accomplishment report presentation held at the Apo View Hotel Davao, DA 11 director Remelyn Recoter said the biggest chunk of this budget will go to development of farm-to-market roads at P1.2 billion, followed by technical and support services at P382 million.
Other budget allocations also include agricultural equipment and support services at P190.5 million, P49.4 million for irrigation network services, agriculture and policy at P43.239 million, and plan and animal regulation services at P4.569 million.
She said DA 11 is focusing on the ugrading of the infrastructures for agri-fishery and placing them in strategic areas.
Recoter also said they intend to intensify linkages between producers and markets. For farmers, they seeks to strenghten rural finance and social protection.
Farmers can also expect a major boost next year, as DA 11 also vows support for the interventions in the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Plan (AFMP) and its commodity roadmaps.
The department also cited the small fisherfolks to benefit from the development programs for next year.
Another support that the farmers will get from DA 11 will be the establishment of more facilities for livestock and poultry.
Also, DA 11 started the "bounty system" program wherein farmers will earn P1 for every adult rhino beetle, or locally known as "bakukang," and .50 centavos for a larvae in areas infested with pests in Baganga and Cateel in Davao Oriental.
She said DA 11 has so far disbursed P163,000 for this project.
Recoter said they are also supporting Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) in releasing of fly-like insects called parasitoid Tetralichus to eliminate coconut pest Brontispa longgissima.
"We are proactive in our fight against Brontispa longgissima... we're producing biological agents against the disease," she said.
