THE Department of Environmental and Natural Resources-Davao Region (DENR 11) has widened the scope of areas to be rehabilitated under the National Greening Program (NGP).
DENR 11 director Joselin Marcus E. Fragada said they have cranked up to 27,000 hectares from the original 16,000 hectares of land to be planted with around 8 million to 9 million seedlings to be planted in various sites.
"The NGP is one of our big ticket programs for this year. We would like to be able to achieve more this year by increasing our hectarage," he said.
The regional office planted around 8.8 million seedlings in 16,223 hectares (has.) across Davao Region. Around 2.05 million were planted in 3,796 has. in Davao Oriental, 1.21 million were planted in 2,127 has. in Davao del Norte, 2.09 million were planted in 4,000 has. in Compostela Valley, and 3.43 million in 6,300 has. in Davao del Sur.
They added mangrove tree planting as part of the NGP for 2014 in the region.
"We have added the mangrove tree planting in coastline areas. This is because it was observed that some towns in Region 8 were not totally damaged by the storm surge brought by Typhoon Yolanda with the help of the mangroves surrounding them," Fragada said.
They have yet to decide on the target areas where to plant the mangroves, but it may include the coastlines of Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Davao del Norte.
