THE Department of Agriculture (DA) office in Davao sent off Tuesday four units of farm tractors to Tacloban City to assist in the rehabilitation of the agricultural sector in areas affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda, an official said.
The farm equipment, four Massey Ferguson 360 tractors, will be utilized for debris clearing and land preparations. Two of these are owned by DA-Davao while the two others are provided by Davao Oriental and Compostella Valley, with one each.
Regional rice program focal person Edel M. Dondonilla, during the ceremonial sendoff Tuesday at Sasa Port, said the tractors were procured by the regional office through the rice program.
He also said the tractors are equipped with a rotator and leveler.
DA-Davao Director Remelyn Recoter said during a meeting two weeks ago with DA-Central Visayas Director Antonio Gerundio that they have identified the town of San Isidro in Leyte, a corn plantation area that was damaged by Typhoon Yolanda, as needing rehabilitating.
"The tractors will be sent directly to San Isidro once it reaches Tacloban to help in rehabilitating the corn program there. The tractors will be used for debris clearing and land preparation," she said.
Dondonilla said the tractors will be used for 30 working days from Monday to Saturday. After which, the equipment will be returned to DA-Davao office.
"There is a possibility there will be an extension on the use of the tractors and if the request for extension is approved, then the two tractors provided by the regional office will be retained," he said.
Recoter said the lending of the tractors is their way of "paying forward" for the assistance the regional offices of Northern Mindanao and Soccsksargen had extended after Typhoon Pablo struck Davao Oriental and Compostella Valley in 2012.
