A DAVAO-based inventor is planning to commercially produce a fuel additive made from cooking oil which aims to improve vehicle engine combustion and ignition.

Inventor Emiliano F. Quitol will make EFQ Biofuel, a fuel additive made from processed cooking oil, available to motorists before the year ends.

Quitol said he came up with the invention because he was finding a way to make used oil useful.

"Usually, food and beverage establishments just throw their used oil which affects the environment badly. I found out about the compressed-air thermal fuel-oil, which recycles used cooking oil into biofuel, and developed it to create the EFQ Biofuel," he said.

Quitol said based on the experiments they conducted, the additive increases the mileage of the vehicle by 10 percent to 20 percent. It also reduces the carbon emission by as much as 50 percent.

"During the testings, when the vehicle was without the additive, it has an opacity of 1.9. After the EFQ Biofuel was added, the opacity was only at .9, that is more or less 50 percent in reduction of carbon emissions," he said, adding that reducing carbon emissions is also one of the purpose of the additive.

Quitol said the additive has a suggested retail price of P80 and is only 1 milliliter.

He also said they will be sourcing their used cooking oil locally.

"We will be coordinating with the barangays for the collection of the used cooking oil. We propose that the puroks will collect it and bring it to the barangay, where we will pick it up, so that it will be centralized," Quitol said, adding the purchasing price will be P15 per liter.

The experimentation and development of the additive began in 2005. In 2009, the Department of Science and Technology loaned Quitol around P1 million for the development of the additive. In 2011, Quitol was recognized in the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit in Davao City for the invention which then earned him a second placer in the national level in 2012. In 2013, he was a qualifier in the International Exhibition of Inventors at Geneva, Switzerland.

It is registered to the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources and Department of Energy in 2013.
