INVESTORS who will be putting up businesses in Mindanao should understand the current state of the island to ensure a good run in their business, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said.

Duterte said the business dynamics on the island are "mind boggling" due to the peace and order situation and the changes in the climate.

"If you are a mayor outside of Mindanao, you worry about criminality. But, if you are a mayor in Mindanao, you don't only worry about criminality but you also have to worry about the rebellion of different fronts here," he said.

For instance, he said the main problem in Davao City in terms of criminality is drugs. He said drug smugglers are able to enter the city through land, water, or sea.

He also urged the business community to push Manila to create a peaceful resolution with other fronts like the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), and the New People's Army (NPA).

"There is a need of constant dialogues between stakeholders. There has to be constant consultations, we have to be partners," Duterte said.

Aside from the peace and order situation, the mayor also said that the changes in climate are also affecting the ways things are done on the island.

"Mindanao used to be exempted from typhoons but now we are experiencing it," Duterte said.

It can be observed in the past few years that typhoons and storms are now affecting the island, like Typhoon Sendong in 2011 and Typhoon Pablo in 2012 and most recently Tropical Depression Agaton.

"[In putting up a business] you have to factor the events and character of the island vis-à-vis the climate and its environment," he said.
