THE business climate in Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) is improving, posting an increase in the number of new business establishments this year, an official said.

Igacos city administrator Cleto Bravo Gales Jr. said the registrations of new businesses in the island reached 292 in January 2014 as compared to 218 business applications in the same period of 2013.

"Probably some of the policies adopted by Davao City have become an opportunity on the part of some business establishments in the island," he said.

He said, for instance, the liquor ban implemented in the city forced some people to go visit the island for a late evening drinking spree.

"But, we are studying this carefully because even though it is an opportunity to our part, there are still some concerns that we need to consider like law and order," Gales said.

He also said that the improved accessibility to the island has also helped improved the business climate and tourism sector of Igacos.

"The concreting of the circumferential road has made a lot of our destinations accessible to the tourists," Gales said.

He also said their one-stop shop and computerization have also improved the island's business climate.

"Since 2003, there has been a significant increase in the number of businesses by an average of 28 to 33 percent," Gales said.
