Fun sale to boost city's bid as Mice destination-A A +A

THE Big Davao Fun Sale qoll not only promote Davao City as one of the shopping hubs in the country, but also as a major destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and expositions and exhibits (Mice).
The fun sale, the country's first month-long city-wide sale, is slated on March 14 to April 16, 2014 and will feature discounts on selected items to as much as 80 percent.
Department of Tourism-Davao (DOT 11) chief tourism operations officer Eden Josephine L. David, who guested in Tuesday's edition of the Davao Business Forum at Derm Path at SM City Davao, said organizers of Mice events always asked them what their delegates can do in the city that will not require them to travel far from the city center.
David said the month-long event will be something to look forward to by participants or delegates during Mice events. Instead of going far from the city to experience Davao, they can simply stay within the city center during the fun sale and enjoy shopping.
She also said more delegates mean more spending which in turn will benefit the economy of the city.
David said an increase in the number of Mice events during future Big Davao Fun Sales will be an indicator that the event is successful.
She also said the fun sale will also position Davao City as a major metropolitan city in the country.
"Some still attributes Davao City to being a rural area and with the fun sale, it is set to bring Davao City out of that notion," David said.
Dondi C. Alentajan, Gaisano Malls head of marketing, said Davao City has still a lot to offer to the tourists coming to city and the fun sale will be a vehicle to promote the city as a whole.
"This will be a coming out for Davao City. In the past there are misconceptions that the city is also a troubled area in Mindanao but when in fact it is not really like that. It is high time that the people get a good sense of what Davao really is," Luigi C. Escano, operations manager of Abreeza Mall, for his part, said.
In a press briefer, DOT 11 said they are expecting a 15 percent increase in tourist arrivals during the Big Davao Fun Sale from some 100,000 visitors recorded in March to April last year.
Mall operators also said they are expecting to see an increase in foot traffic at the malls by around 15 percent to 20 percent.
Russel D. Alaba, assistant vice president for marketing - Mindanao Region of SM Supermalls, said with a good number of Dabawenyos having strong purchasing power, they are seeing an increase in consumer spending once the Big Davao Fun Sale kicks off.
Mall operators are also expecting shoppers coming from outside of the region to shop during the fun sale.
The schedule of sales for the month-long city wide sale are: March 14 to 16 will be the general sale; March 16 to 23 will be Health & Beauty; March 24 to 30 will be electronics and gadgets; March 31 to April 6 will be Home & Travel; April 7 to 16 will be Active Lifestyle/Fashion; and March 14 to April 16 will be Dining, Fruits & Flowers.
The participating malls during in the month-long event are: Abreeza Mall, NCCC Mall of Davao, Robinsons, Gaisano Mall of Davao, Gaisanao Mall of Toril, SM City Davao, and SM Lanang Premier.
The Retail Association of Davao will be spearheading the Big Davao Fun Sale and is supported by the Department of Tourism in Davao Region (DOT 11), in City Government of Davao, and the Philippine Retailers Association. Its official airline partner is Cebu Pacific Air while Silk Air and Singapore Airlines are its global partners. Bank of the Philippines Islands and Mabuhay Taxi are its platinum partners while TV 5 is its official media partner.
