THE Public Employment Service Office (Peso) in Davao City reported that there are some 2,000 students who have already been registered for this year's Special Program for Employment of Students (Spes), but are still lacking job vacancies to cater to all the applicants.

Spes is a program of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) which aims to "help poor but deserving students pursue their education by providing income or augment their income through encouraging their employment during summer and/or Christmas vacations."

Peso-Davao City manager Lilibeth D. Pantinople, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said some 10 companies in Davao City have already signified to provide summer jobs to the applicants, but only around 500 vacancies are available.

"We are in need of more job vacancies to be able to accommodate all these applicants, so we are encouraging local companies to come to our office and be part of the Spes initiative," she said.

Companies employing at least 10 persons may participate in the Spes program.

The duties and responsibilities of the employers are: pay the student in cash at least 60% of his or her salary and full payment of other applicable monetary benefits and incentives; pay the full applicable salary or wage for overtime work rendered by the student; ensure that the student shall not be exposed to hazardous undertakings; ensure the employment of women and young workers shall be in accordance with the Labor Code; and submit to the Peso the Establishment Report Form not later than five working days after the duration of the employment.

Pantinople said Dole will be paying the 40 percent of the student's salary as a counterpart.

She said a fast food chain has already began its Spes program on February while the rest will begin during the summit period.
