THE proposed three-month commercial fishing ban at Davao Gulf is expected to be approved by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in June this year.

The proposed ban is contained in a Joint Administrative Order (JAO) issued by DA and DILG in Davao Region.

Fatima M. Idris, regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), told Sun.Star Davao that after it was presented to and deliberated by the National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFarmc) in February, the JAO has been endorsed for approval by DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala and DILG Secretary Mar Roxas.

She said the JAO is now under legal review by the BFAR central office.

"Until now, we are still waiting for word from them, (but) we expect word from them soon," Idris said.

Earlier, she said the proposed ban was originally for four months, June to September, but BFAR Director Asis Perez, during the deliberations, recommended it to be cut down to three months to be consistent with other fishing bans in the country.

Idris said the ban will allow marine resources in the gulf to recover their numbers. She said the ban falls on the crucial months when many marine life spawn.

She said the ban, in the long run, will benefit the fisherfolk as the population of the fishes increases.

She cited as example the December to March sardine fishing ban in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

She said that in just three years, the ban has increased the population of sardines, causing a spillover effect to other fishing regions like Northern Mindanao and Soccksargen.
