THE Special Program for Employment of Students (Spes) listed a total of 4,644 job vacancies committed by both private companies and the public sector in Davao Region this year.

Spes is a program of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) that aims to "help poor but deserving students pursue their education by providing income or augment their income through encouraging their employment during summer and/or Christmas vacations."

In a phone interview, Sherwin Manual, Department of Labor and Employment (Dole)-Davao's labor communication officer, said around 40 percent of the vacancies are coming from the private sector and around 60 percent are coming from the public sector.

He said that this year, they are targeting to receive some 7,500 job vacancy pledges more from both the public and private sector.

"Most of the private companies that have pledged job vacancies are coming from major employment generators like malls and fast food chains," Manual said.

The agency is encouraging more private companies to pledge job vacancies to give more jobs to the young people.

Manual also said that companies joining the program will benefit from it in terms of the company's financial aspects.

"They will only pay the student 60 percent while the 40 percent of the salary will be shouldered by the agency," he said.

Should students want to enroll in the program, they may go to the nearest Public Employment Service Office in their town or city.

They can also register online through the www.spes.dole11.net, where they can input their data and be matched with the skills requirement to the skills a company is searching for.
